Here at Redline Speed Worx we really LOVE turbocharged cars. No matter how pure or how fun a high strung naturally aspirated engine may be, there is something about the feeling of a turbocharged car coming onto boost, and hearing the waste gates crack open that puts a huge grin on any enthusiasts face.
When it comes to increasing performance, turbocharged cars really start to shine with only minimal upgrades. There is so much potential for improvement on some platforms that 3-4 relatively simple modifications to the turbocharging system you can add 100-200 horsepower.
The Porsche 911 Turbo, the 997 in this specific example, is not just a great car to modify but it’s also one that responds VERY well to turbocharging improvements. Although the stock car is very capable, one of the areas where it has the biggest room for gains is in the intercooling department. Being a rear-engine flat six, the packaging restraints of fitting, plumbing, and cooling air via the intercooler is a complicated task. Porsche found that they could minimize turbo lag and maximize responsiveness by placing the intercoolers in the rear fenders, giving necessity to those two gorgeous intakes we have all seen on the rear hips of the 911 Turbo since the early 90’s.
When you stack one of the stock intercoolers on top of the custom unit from Alpha Performance there’s a few obvious changes:
100% all aluminum construction on the Alpha Performance Intercoolers. Notice the OEM cores have plastic end tanks, which is great for light weight and cheap production, but when it comes to holding a higher level of boost pressures, and durability the AMS/Alpha Performance units are much more robust.
The volume of the intercooler core and the end tanks are much larger allowing for more cooling ability, greater flow, and less resistance.
In addition to the Intercoolers cores, Alpha (AMS Performance) also created some gorgeous carbon fiber shrouds to help effectively channel more fresh air through the intercooler core.
Once installed in the car there is no visual evidence of changes from the outside of the car. The bumpers fit like stock, the OEM inlets and outlets meet up with the new ductwork with OEM levels of fitment.
AMS reports gains of approx. 32 hp and 12 ft lbs of torque between peak numbers with only installing the intercoolers. In addition to outright power gains, the car runs cooler, with a greater ability to produce power pull- after- pull due to the increased ability of the intercooler to shed heat from the intake air.
