Upgrading The BMW M2: HRE Wheels & Akrapovic Exhaust

Much alike the AMG lineup from Mercedes, the S/RS lineup from Audi, the BMW M2 is far more than a spruced up 2-series.

Improving upon these cars requires much more thought and effort than modifying your standard 3 series, C- Class, or A4. These cars are much more than just a sum of their parts, but the combination of sorted suspension, big brakes, and a powerful engine. Each individual component is subject to tighter tolerances, higher performance tiers, and lighter weight standards. In order to make substantial improvements over already well-thought-out engineering decisions means consulting with the very best in the industry.

So when it comes to improving upon the wheelset and exhaust system on the BMW M2 there are only really two sources to find them:

HRE Wheels and Akrapovic Exhausts Systems

We have been partnered with HRE for the past 5 years, and what first attracted us to them as a Performance Partner is the fact that they were firstly, able to custom make wheels to whatever specification we needed, secondly able to create wheels that were lightweight and strong, and lastly create wheels in a wide variety of styles and colors. After all, if the wheels are light, strong, and fit perfectly, what good is it if they look horrible?

Although the HRE Forged lineup are built per application they have targeted specific sizes and fitments for their new R101/R101 Lightweight forged offerings. The beauty of this lightweight specific design and forged manufacturing process ensures that the wheels are as light as possible for the specific load ratings necessitated by the individual cars.

The 19.0″ x 9.5″ front and 19.0″ x 10.5″ pairing weigh 16.6 lbs for the front and 17.2lbs for the rear. For those that know removing "unsprung" weight from the wheel & tire package makes a big impact on all aspects of performance, braking, acceleration, and handling. The lighter the wheel and tire are, the easier they are to speed up, or slow down, and also the less difficult to keep in contact with the road surface, which is the ultimate goal of suspension tuning.

HRE’s R101 Lightweight takes the R101 style to the next level. The R101 LW is specifically designed for individual vehicle models creating the ultimate in lightweight optimization for street and track use. Every vehicle model has a different load rating and power output, so we’ve utilized this data to redesign the R101 for each model application fine-tuning each detail of the wheel to remove weight and add stiffness where possible.

A few of us here at RSW are two wheeled enthusiasts as much as we love cars, and we’re well familiar with the Akrapovic brand’s prowess in the motorcycle arena, but it wasn’t until learning more about the brand in the past 12 months that we really began to understand and comprehend just how impressive these systems are. It’s not just the construction, or the materials, or the sound, it’s the combination of all these facets of exhaust design that make the Akrapovic product truly second to none.

In addition to the beautifully crafted titanium exhaust with carbon fiber tips you also have the option of adding a carbon fiber rear valence. The Dry Carbon fiber finish that is featured on the tips is the exact same style and weave of carbon fiber that comes on the valence.

Also for those looking to unlock more power there is also the option of adding accompanying downpipes! They add an extra 13 hp and 15 ft lbs of torque without tuning, not to mention shedding another 15 lbs from the car whilst still retaining heatshields like the factory units.
